2018 The Business of Vineyards - Part III: Winegrape Contracts, Negotiations & Lessons Learned from 2017

Overview:

The devastating fires last October led to significant issues for our grapegrowers and their winemaking customers as concerns about smoke taint and actual instances of it affected relationships all over Napa County. This led to many a negotiation between growers and customers, and in some instances, contract disputes and even litigation regarding the financial ramifications from smoke taint and the actions folks took. At our upcoming seminar, local vineyard and winery attorney Scott Greenwood-Meinert of Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass’s Wine Country office in Napa will present to our growers on the variety of issues that smoke taint raises for grape purchase agreements and the parties to them. Scott will share some different contract provision examples to help demonstrate issues and the way different contract provisions deal with certain common legal issues. This will be an interactive presentation, so questions and comments are welcome. Following Scott's presentation, John Wilkinson and Brandon Reitz of Bin to Bottle will discuss winemaking during the 2017 wildfires. The seminar will conclude with a wine tasting and open discussion.
