Join us for a Spring Round Table discussion on drought farming. Listen to our panel of experts as they discuss topics concerning growers, such as:

  • What is the right canopy size during a drought year?
  • How can you grow the appropriate canopy size in weak or vigorous blocks?
  • What drought responses can you expect later this summer from different rootstocks?
  • How much stress should you aim for at different times of the year to maintain your canopies?

Meet the Speakers:

Tom Shapland, CEO, Tule Technologies

Tom Shapland, PhD, and his research team developed a method to measure Actual Evapotranspiration during his dissertation work at UC Davis. Tom is the CEO and co-founder of Tule (pronounced “too-lee”). Tule helps hundreds of growers make irrigation decisions across California. Tom has a Bachelor of Science degree in Viticulture and Enology, a Master of Science in Horticulture & Agronomy, and a Doctorate in Horticulture and Agronomy.

Michael Wolf, Owner, Michael Wolf Vineyard Services

Mike’s early farming experience came from working for Mendocino Vineyards Company, in Ukiah from 1978 thru 1981, when the opportunity arose to move to Napa, as a vineyard supervisor of a large agricultural development in Pope Valley. Following 12 years of experience with every aspect of vineyard development and production, in 1994, Mike was offered a job managing 500 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley for Beckstoffer Vineyards, who also was his early employer in Ukiah. Michael Wolf Vineyard Services was founded in 1997 and provides a full range of vineyard management services. The company has over 40 clients, including both independent growers and wineries, representing over 650 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley.
Dr. Kris Lowe, Owner, Vine Balance Consulting

Dr. Kristin Lowe has been studying, researching, teaching, and consulting in viticulture since 2000. Originally from upstate New York, she achieved her Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Sciences from Cornell University in 2000. Kristin subsequently attended graduate school at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) and completed her Ph.D. in Genetics in 2006 with a focus on grape rootstock genetics and breeding. Kristin began her career in the grape and wine industry as a viticulturist and California licensed pest control advisor in 2006 in Napa and Sonoma counties. She has worked in vineyards ranging in approach from sustainable to biodynamic and has consulted with small vineyard owners, large winery corporations, and everything in between. Kristin has worked with growers on pest management, fertilization, irrigation, viticulture practices, disease diagnostics, and vineyard development plans. She is passionate about working in the interface between viticulture science and practical farming and shares this passion with her clients in the pursuit of growing premium quality grapes.

Randy Heinzen, President, Vineyard Professional Services

Randy joined VPS in 2013 and acquired the company in May of 2017. Before moving his family to Templeton, Randy lived in Napa for 10 years. He most recently was a Vineyard Manager at Beckstoffer Vineyards, where the ranches under his control included To Kalon, Dr. Crane, Las Piedras, and many others. Before Beckstoffer, Randy was the Director of Vineyard Operations for Saintsbury Winery in Carneros. Randy graduated from Cal Poly with a minor in Viticulture and spent time at the University of Adelaide in Australia working on a Masters' of Viticulture. He holds several certificates in Winery Business management from Sonoma State and UC Davis and is an Accredited Farm Manager through the ASFMRA. Locally, Randy is involved with several workgroups focused on the stewardship of natural resources, including serving on the Board of the Upper Salinas - Las Tablas RCD. Randy recently received the prestigious Winegrape Grower of the Year Award at the 2018 California Mid State Fair.
