This presentation will include a comprehensive summary of the results from the 2019 and 2020 Wages & Benefits Survey including an in-depth comparison of Napa Valley to other agricultural regions and industries and analysis of the Napa Labor Force, its characteristics, trends and some insights on the impact of COVID-19 on it. This information can be used as a powerful tool to help growers and vineyard managers create the right incentives to attract and maintain a high-quality workforce.

Meet the Speakers:

Dr. Monica Cooper, Farm Advisor-Viticulture, UC Cooperative Extension

Since 2009, Monica has been employed as a Farm Advisor-Viticulture with UC Cooperative Extension in Napa County. Educated as a “Plant Doctor” at the University of Florida, she has professional training in plant pathology, entomology, soils, and plant science. Her research interests include pest management, viticulture production, and vineyard team dynamics. She is Executive Director of the Napa Valley Vineyard Technical Group, and has an active outreach program with the goal of extending science-based technical information to the vineyard industry.

Dr. Malcolm Hobbs, Staff Research Associate, UC Cooperative Extension

In 2004 Malcolm gained a PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Southampton before working in several research areas. In 2015 he joined the Napa UC Cooperative Extension and has been engaged on research projects related to vineyard pest management and agricultural labor.

Dr. Giovanni Peri, Professor of Economics, UC Davis

Giovanni Peri is Professor of Economics and Chair of the Economics Department at the University of California, Davis and Director of the Interdisciplinary Migration Cluster at UC Davis. Dr. Peri is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Editor of “Regional Science and Urban Economics”. He is on the Editorial Board of the “Journal of the European Economic Association”, and of several academic journals. Dr. Peri has published in several academic journals including the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, The Review of Economics and Statistics and the Economic Journal. His research has been featured in the Economist, the New York Times, the Wall Street journal and other newspapers. Dr. Peri’s research focuses on the economic determinants and effects of human migrations.
