Workforce Modernization Act and H2A: Planning for Tomorrow’s Workforce
Erica Rosasco, Attorney at Law, McKague Rosasco PC

With increasing pressure from the federal government and an improved economy in Mexico, many farm workers are not returning. The children of farm workers are opting for more education and higher paying jobs. This leaves us with an aging and diminishing workforce. One thing we know is that we cannot continue with the status quo. We will discuss the pending Workforce Modernization Act and the basics of the H2A program as options for the future of our farm work.
10:45 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
Using Job Satisfaction Assessments as a Tool to Address Agricultural Labor Shortages and Promote Health & Wellness Among Agricultural Workers
Malcolm Hobbs, Staff Research Associate, University of California Cooperative Extension

Improving agricultural workers’ job satisfaction is an innovative approach to addressing labor shortages in the California agricultural sector. Job satisfaction, defined as a pleasurable experience resulting from one’s work, is one of the strongest predictors of employee well-being, and high job satisfaction has multiple benefits, including lower worker turnover, increased productivity, lower absenteeism and healthier workers. Drs. Cooper & Hobbs have developed a tool to measure job satisfaction among agricultural workers, and will discuss strategies for assessing and promoting job satisfaction in the agricultural workforce.
