2017 Grower of the Year

Ted Hall, Long Meadow Ranch

Rutherford grower Ted Hall of Long Meadow Ranch has been named the 2017 Napa Valley Grower of the Year.  Hall will be honored for his contributions to the Napa Valley wine industry and the community on May 12 at the Napa Valley Grapegrowers 42nd Annual Dinner.

Ted Hall has been President & CEO of Long Meadow Ranch since 1989, where he and his team have developed a world-class diversified agricultural program.  They produce grapes, wine, olives, olive oil, beef, lamb, eggs, fruits and vegetables.  Much of what they produce is served at Hall’s acclaimed farm-to-table restaurant in St. Helena, Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch, and at the Long Meadow Ranch Winery.

Napa Valley Grapegrowers President, Garrett Buckland, noted, “Ted’s contributions to the Napa Valley have been crucial to the continued success of agriculture in the Napa Valley. The Long Meadow Ranch motto of “excellence through responsible farming” is evident in every aspect of his personal and professional life. He inspires others by example and his dedication to agricultural and environmental preservation are unparalleled.  We are very happy to recognize him as the 2017 Grower of the Year”.

Hall has long been active in the preservation of Napa Valley vineyards and shows no signs of letting up.  He currently serves on the Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG) Board of Directors and is an active member of the NVG Industry Issues Committee.  In 2016, Hall masterfully chaired the Napa County Agriculture Protection Advisory Committee (APAC), which met for over 9 months to discuss the future of agriculture in Napa Valley and the policies that will ensure its continued success.  Hall assumed that post with decades of proven commitment to organic viticulture and diversified, sustainable farming principles.  He is deeply committed to agricultural preservation and as such, has donated multiple conservation easements of land in Napa County.

Involvement in the wine and agricultural industries in Napa County has been a constant in Hall’s career, as has community service.  He currently chairs the St. Helena School District Agricultural Education Committee and is a member of the Community Industry Issues Committee within the Napa Valley Vintners.  He has served on the Advisory Board of the Land Trust of Napa County and is a former member of the Napa County Local Food Council.   Hall also served on the Board of Visitors & Fellows at the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.

Hall was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and lived on a small family farm in nearby Potter Township. He attended Princeton University and completed his studies with a graduate degree from Stanford University (MBA).  He later served in the Unites States Marine Corps.  Throughout his life, he has been a musician and still plays the jazz trombone and the piano regularly.

Hall is known for his dedication, solid judgment, attention to detail, insights, and true love of the land.

The Napa Valley Grapegrowers membership will gather May 12 to honor Hall and celebrate 42 years as the organization responsible for the promotion and preservation of Napa Valley vineyards.  Click here for more details.
